Before poly, a livestock waterer was concrete, steel, or a stock tank with a heater and an extension cord. Concrete cracked. Steel rusted from the inside out. Heated tanks turned into a line item on the power bill and a fire risk in a dusty barn.
In 1974 our founders took a different route: a rotationally moulded polyethylene shell, double‑walled, with insulation foamed in between, and drinking spaces small enough to trap the water’s own heat. It was the first poly livestock waterer on the market, and it did something no steel tank could it stayed open through an Iowa January with no power connected to it at all.
Ahrens Agricultural Industries Co. was established in Grinnell, Iowa to build that idea at scale. The MiraFount® brand it produced became the reference point for energy‑free watering, and the original 3320 platform is still recognisable in the catalogue today. What has changed is breadth: more than forty models now cover energy‑free, heated open‑top and constant‑flow watering for cattle, dairy, swine, horses, sheep and goats.
We remain an independent, privately held manufacturer of roughly fifty people, still designing, moulding, assembling and shipping from the same Grinnell campus.
Add capability without adding failure points.
The original MiraFount® ships a double‑wall, foam‑insulated polyethylene unit that holds open water without a heating element.
Manufacturing consolidates in Grinnell, Iowa, giving the business its own tooling, moulding and assembly capacity under one roof.
Two‑, four‑ and six‑hole MiraFount platforms arrive for feedyard and dry‑lot duty, alongside species‑specific drinking heights for swine and equine.
Insulated open‑trough units with submersible heaters answer the dairy return alley and the compact pen energy efficient rather than energy free.
Stocking dealers and distributors across the United States and Canada put parts, sizing help and installation experience within a day’s reach of most producers.
Energy‑free, heated and constant‑flow platforms sharing common valves, floats and wear parts so a fifteen‑year‑old unit is still serviceable.
Clean, accessible, palatable water is the single cheapest welfare and performance intervention on any livestock operation.
We would rather sell one unit that lasts twenty years than three that last seven. Wear parts stay available long after a model leaves the catalogue.
Design, tooling, moulding, assembly and test happen in Grinnell. Short feedback loops between the floor and the drawing are why the products improve.
Our dealers install, service and stock what they sell. That relationship is worth more to a producer in February than any spec sheet.
Our plant houses rotational moulding, foam injection, sub‑assembly, wet test, warehousing and the customer service desk that answers your call. Engineering sits fifty feet from the moulding line, which is exactly where it should be.
